What to look for

We have compiled some useful information for parents who want to make the best choice when they are choosing the day care options for their children.

We have broken down the tips into categories below:

Interview Day Care Possibilities

These are some of the questions you should ask your possible care-giver
  • Is there a place for my child?
  • What hours and days are you open?
  • How much does a place cost?
  • When is payment due?
  • Do you charge for holidays, absences due to vacations or illness, or late pickups?
  • How many supervisors are there for the children? (What is the ratio of Supervisors to children)
  • How much child care experience and education do you have?
  • What ages do you serve?
  • Must a child be toilet trained?

Home Carers

These are some of the questions you should ask if the care giver looks after children in their own house.
  • Are there others living in the home? If so, who and what age are they?
  • Who, besides the provider, may be caring for my child?
  • Will my child be taken out of the home while in your care?
  • Are there pets or smoking in the home?
You should also visit the house when the children are cared, while there are children there, to see how the children interact with the carer, how much attention they get, if the facilities are safe and clean, is the house secure, what sorts of toy facilities are there.

You should also clarify when you could visit, what happens if your child is sick, do they have first-aid experience, are they accredited and do they have references from other parents.

You should always ask for a number of references from your care-giver. The types of questions you want to ask these referees include:

  • Was the caregiver reliable?
  • How did the caregiver discipline your child?
  • How did you get along with the caregiver?
  • Was the caregiver respectful of your values and culture?
  • Would you recommend the caregiver?
  • If your child is no longer with the caregiver, why did you leave?

Stay in constant communication with your care-giver, frequestly ask how your child is doing, do they have any concerns. Also talk to the other parents and get their views on the care givers services.
