Missing Children

If your child is missing from home, search the house checking closets, piles of laundry, in and under beds, inside old refrigeratorswherever a child may crawl or hide. Talk to your childs friends, check that they are not with them or if they know where they may be.

If you still cannot find your child, immediately call your local law-enforcement agency.

If your child disappears in a store, notify the store manager or security office. Then immediately call your local law-enforcement agency. Many stores have a Code Adam plan of action if a child is missing in the store, employees immediately mobilize to look for the missing child.

When you call law enforcement, provide your child's name, date of birth, height, weight, and any other unique identifiers such as eyeglasses and braces. Tell them when you noticed that your child was missing and what clothing he or she was wearing.

Request that your child's name and identifying information be immediately entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File.

After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Reasons for Missing Children

The largest number of missing children are 'runaways'; followed by 'family abductions'; then 'lost, injured, or otherwise missing children'; and finally, the smallest category, but the one in which the child is at greatest risk of injury or death, 'nonfamily abductions.' Many times this question is asked under the assumption that family abductions are not a serious matter; however, this is not true. In most cases children are told that the left-behind parent doesn’t want or love them. These children may live the life of a fugitive, always on the run with the noncustodial parent and stripped away from their home, friends, school, and family.

Internet Safety Tips

Ensure that yourr children know that they should
  • NOT give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without their parents' permission.
  • TELL their parents right away if they come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
  • NEVER agree to get together with someone they "met" online without first checking with their parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, Be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
  • NEVER send a person a picture or anything else without first checking with their parents.
  • DO NOT respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make them feel uncomfortable. It is not their fault if they get a message like that. If they do ,tell their parents right away so that they can contact the online service.
  • TALK with their parents so that we can set up rules for going online. Decide upon the time of day that they can be online, the length of time they can be online, and appropriate areas for them to visit.Do not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

Hopefully, you will never have to endure the trauma of a missing child, but just in case, follow these simple tips.
